Statement from El Dorado County Democratic Party Regarding Party Switch of State Sen. Marie Alvarado-Gil
PLACERVILLE, CA, August 9, 2024—Yesterday Democratic State Senator Marie Alvarado-Gil, who represents Senate District 4, announced she is switching her party affiliation to Republican.
This is disappointing for voters who elected Senator Alvarado-Gil as a Democrat. Voters trusted her to represent them, and she has betrayed that trust. There is a big difference between the values of the party of Trump and those of Democrats fighting to protect our basic freedoms.
This move may be politically expedient in the short term for Senator Alvarado-Gil as she looks ahead to reelection in 2026, but siding with extremism is never the right choice. To be clear, the Republican Party in El Dorado County is extreme and that’s what she is beckoning others to join.
Senator Alvarado-Gil will undoubtedly be celebrated in this moment by MAGA
Republican politicians in Senate District 4, but once the dust settles, Republican voters would be wise to ask themselves if they can trust her any more than Democrats can.
